The Super Visa allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to visit for extended periods without repeated applications. This page sets out eligibility, documentation and the common grounds for refusal.
The Super Visa is a multiple-entry visa specifically for parents and grandparents. Six features distinguish it from a standard visitor visa.
Parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. It is not available to other relatives.
Permits a considerably longer stay per entry than a standard visitor visa, without repeated applications.
Issued as a multiple-entry visa, generally valid for up to ten years or until passport expiry, whichever comes first.
A letter from the child or grandchild in Canada, undertaking financial support and stating household size.
The inviting family member must demonstrate income meeting the Low Income Cut-Off for the relevant family size.
Private medical insurance from an approved provider is mandatory and must meet the specified coverage conditions.
Four documents form the core of a Super Visa application. Weakness in any of them is the usual cause of refusal.
From the child or grandchild, confirming financial support for the stay and stating the size of their household.
Evidence that the inviting family member meets the Low Income Cut-Off applicable to their family size.
A birth certificate or equivalent official document establishing the parent or grandparent relationship.
Valid private medical insurance meeting the coverage and duration conditions in force at the time of application.
Most of the work sits on the Canadian side of the family, and the documentation has to be assembled in the right order.
Confirm the relationship and the inviting family member's income.
Invitation letter, income evidence, relationship proof and insurance.
Submit online or through a Visa Application Centre.
Complete the medical examination and attend the biometrics appointment.
The outcome rests with the visa office concerned.
Super Visa refusals rarely turn on the relationship, which is straightforward to evidence. They turn on income falling short of the Low Income Cut-Off for the household size, or on insurance that does not meet the required conditions. We check both against the current requirements before anything is submitted, and advise where the application is not yet ready.
