Canada operates a structured, points-based permanent residence system open to skilled applicants from India. This page sets out the available pathways, how candidates are assessed, and what the process requires.
Canada is the most common destination for skilled applicants from India. Six features of its system account for this.
Points, thresholds and draw results are published, allowing candidates to assess their position before committing to the process.
The majority of candidates selected through Express Entry do not hold a Canadian job offer.
A spouse and dependent children are included within the same application rather than a separate process.
Permanent residents access public healthcare and schooling on the same basis as citizens.
Permanent residence is not tied to an employer, a province or a specific role.
Permanent residence leads to citizenship eligibility once the residency requirement is satisfied.
Canada operates more than sixty immigration programs. The following are those most relevant to skilled applicants from India.
The principal economic immigration system, managing the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class and Federal Skilled Trades Program. Candidates enter a pool and are ranked.
Every province and territory except Quebec operates its own program, nominating candidates who meet local labour market needs. An enhanced nomination adds 600 CRS points.
For skilled workers and international graduates holding a qualifying offer from a designated employer in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island or Newfoundland and Labrador.
A community-focused pathway for candidates with qualifying employment in participating communities outside the major urban centres.
A pathway supporting French-speaking skilled workers with qualifying employment in participating francophone communities outside Quebec.
Quebec selects its own immigrants under a separate system, including the Quebec Skilled Worker Program and programs for entrepreneurs and investors.
Many applicants reach permanent residence through Canadian work experience. Our work permit guidance covers the wider picture.
Tied to one named employer and the conditions stated on the permit. An approved LMIA is frequently required.
Not tied to an employer, but restricted to specific eligible categories rather than available to all applicants.
Allows eligible permanent residence applicants, including Express Entry and PNP candidates, to continue working while a decision is pending.
An open permit for graduates of designated institutions. See our study visa guidance.
The Comprehensive Ranking System scores candidates out of 1,200. Understanding where your points sit indicates whether your profile is currently competitive.
Up to 500 points for age, education, language ability and work experience, apportioned between principal applicant and spouse.
Up to 100 points where education, language ability and experience combine, such as a degree alongside strong test results.
Up to 600 points for a provincial nomination, French language ability, Canadian study or a sibling resident in Canada.
Each draw sets its own minimum score, which moves with the size and strength of the pool at that time.
No application can be filed until credential assessment and language results are in hand. Both take several weeks, and the timeline begins there.
Credential assessment and an approved language test result.
Entry to the pool with the CRS score calculated correctly.
Address the points gaps: language, French or a nomination.
Sixty days to submit the full document set once invited.
The outcome rests with IRCC.
Before committing time and money to the process, you should know your current CRS score, which factors would most improve it, and whether a provincial nomination is realistic for your occupation. We complete that assessment first and give you a candid view of your prospects.
Provincial nomination streams and federal category-based draws both target specific occupations. Your field affects your prospects alongside your score.
