The United Kingdom operates a sponsorship-based immigration system, under which most work routes require an employer holding a licence. This page sets out the principal routes, how eligibility is determined, and what the process requires.
The United Kingdom remains a principal destination for Indian professionals and students. Six features of the system account for this.
No additional language barrier for Indian professionals already working in English.
The register of licensed sponsors is public, allowing candidates to target employers able to hire them.
Sustained demand across healthcare, technology, engineering, finance and academia.
Graduates of UK institutions may remain for a defined period to work without sponsorship.
Most work routes permit a partner and children to accompany the main applicant, subject to conditions.
Several work routes lead to indefinite leave to remain once the qualifying residence conditions are met.
UK routes divide between those requiring employer sponsorship, those requiring endorsement, and study routes. Which applies depends on whether an offer is already held.
The principal work route. Requires a Certificate of Sponsorship from a licensed employer, an eligible occupation code, and a salary meeting both the general threshold and the occupation going rate.
A route within the Skilled Worker system for eligible health and care professions, carrying reduced application fees and specific eligibility conditions.
For individuals endorsed by a recognised body as a leader or emerging leader in academia, research, arts, culture or digital technology. No job offer required.

Sponsored applications turn on four requirements. Each is assessed independently, and failing any one of them ends the application.
The employer must hold a valid licence and assign a Certificate of Sponsorship. Employers without a licence cannot hire you at all.
The role must sit within an eligible occupation code at the required skill level, not merely resemble your experience.
The salary must meet both the general threshold for the route and the published going rate for that specific occupation.
Evidenced through an approved test, a degree taught in English, or nationality, depending on the route.
Since only licensed employers can sponsor, the substantive work lies in identifying those employers and positioning the profile before any application arises.
Confirm the occupation code and required skill level.
Identify licensed employers recruiting in that occupation.
Position the CV for UK conventions and applicant tracking systems.
Support the application once sponsorship is assigned.
The outcome rests with the Home Office.
The Home Office publishes the register of licensed sponsors, and an employer not on it cannot issue a Certificate of Sponsorship whatever its intentions. Applying to unlicensed employers is the most common way candidates lose months on a UK search. We work from the register, establish your occupation code and salary position first, and approach only employers able to complete the process.
