Scope of a
Job Seeker Visa

This category is frequently misunderstood. It grants permission to search, and is issued to candidates who already meet a high qualification threshold. It is not a work permit.

Legal Entry to Search

Entry to the country for the specific purpose of seeking employment, and no other activity.

A Defined Period

A fixed search window, commonly six months, with the Netherlands orientation year running longer.

Interviews in Person

Local availability addresses the principal objection employers raise regarding overseas candidates.

Conversion Route

A qualifying offer converts the visa to a residence and work permit, generally without leaving the country.

No Work Rights

The holder may seek employment but may not take up work until conversion is approved.

Self-Funded

Funds covering the entire search period must be demonstrated, as no income may be earned during it.

Countries Offering
Job Seeker Routes

A limited number of countries operate this category, each with its own name, duration and qualification threshold. Canada and Australia do not offer one.

Germany

Job Seeker Visa

Up to six months to seek employment, for graduates and skilled professionals whose qualifications are recognised to German standards. The points-based Opportunity Card operates alongside it.

Austria

Job Seeker Visa

A points-assessed search period for very highly qualified workers, converting to the Red-White-Red Card once a qualifying offer is secured.

Sweden

Job Seeking Permit

A residence permit allowing highly qualified candidates to seek employment or explore establishing a business, subject to completed higher education.

Portugal

Job Seeker Visa

A short search visa with an extension option, permitting the holder to remain and register with the employment service while applying locally.

Netherlands

Orientation Year

An extended search year for recent graduates of qualifying universities, carrying broader work rights than other job seeker categories.

UAE

Job Exploration Entry

Visit and job-exploration permits for eligible candidates. Entry permission does not constitute permission to commence employment.

Eligibility
Requirements

These categories are intended to attract skilled professionals, so the criteria sit considerably above those applying to visitor or study visas.

🎓

Recognised Qualification

A degree or vocational qualification formally assessed as equivalent in the destination country.

Relevant Experience

Professional experience in the occupation intended, evidenced through employer letters.

Proof of Funds

Sufficient to support yourself throughout the search period. Germany commonly requires a blocked account.

Health Insurance

Valid cover for the full duration of the stay, required before the visa is issued.

CV and Cover Letter

A local-format CV and a letter setting out your search plan, qualifications and intentions.

Language Ability

Rarely mandatory for the visa itself, but frequently decisive in the job search that follows.

Our Process

The visa is the more straightforward stage. The search that follows determines whether the permitted period results in an offer.

01

Check Eligibility

Assess qualification, experience and funds against the criteria.

02

Profile Marketing

Position the CV for that market before applying.

03

Employer Outreach

Begin approaching relevant employers ahead of departure.

04

Visa Application

Book the appointment and prepare the file and interview.

05

Decision

The outcome rests with the immigration authority.

Preparation Before
Departure Determines
the Outcome

A job seeker visa provides a defined window rather than employment. Candidates who arrive without a positioned profile, a target list of employers and outreach already underway typically lose the first two months establishing themselves. Our work begins well before departure, which is the stage over which a candidate has genuine control.

Application Guidance

Converting to a
Work Permit

A qualifying offer secured within the search period converts without leaving the country. Our work permit guidance covers the subsequent stage.

Qualifying Offer

The role must meet the salary and skill conditions set for conversion, not merely constitute a job offer.

Apply In Country

Most systems permit conversion in place, without returning to India to refile.

Timing

The conversion must be applied for before the search period expires.

Longer-Term Routes

A work permit is generally the first stage toward residence eligibility in that country.

Questions About Job Seeker Visas?

Answers on eligibility, work rights, funds, available countries and conversion to a work permit.

A job seeker visa is a category offered by certain countries permitting entry for the specific purpose of seeking employment. It allows qualified foreign nationals to explore the local job market in person, attend interviews and meet employers within a defined period, typically around six months.
No. It grants permission to seek work and nothing further. It does not guarantee employment, an interview or an offer, and no consultancy can undertake to secure those outcomes. Its value is placing the candidate within the market, where employers who prefer locally available candidates are able to meet them.
Generally not. Holders may seek employment but may not take up work under this category. Once a qualifying offer is secured, the visa must be converted to a residence and work permit before commencing. The Netherlands orientation year is the principal exception, carrying broader work rights.
Germany, Austria, Sweden, Portugal and the Netherlands operate versions of this category, and the UAE offers job-exploration entry permits. Canada and Australia do not. Both operate points-based skilled migration instead, under which candidates apply from outside and may be invited without a job offer.
Each country sets a threshold covering living costs for the entire search period, as no income may be earned during it. Germany commonly requires a blocked account holding the full amount. These figures are revised periodically, so the current requirement is confirmed against the relevant embassy before applying.
The holder is required to depart when the visa expires. Overstaying carries serious consequences, including removal and bans on future entry across the region. For this reason the search should begin several months before departure, with employer outreach already underway on arrival.
This depends on the occupation. Where employers require local availability and prompt interviews, presence in the country is decisive. For occupations covered by points-based skilled migration, applying from India may be faster and less costly. A profile assessment establishes which applies.
