The UK calls its system points based, but there is no score to improve. You either hold a qualifying offer from a licensed sponsor or you do not. Since July 2025 the route has been restricted to graduate-level roles, and from 8 January 2026 the English requirement rose to B2.

Key Takeaways
- The Skilled Worker route requires a job offer from an employer holding a Home Office sponsor licence, who assigns you a Certificate of Sponsorship. Without that, there is no application.
- The role must sit at RQF Level 6, broadly degree level, unless it appears on the Temporary Shortage List.
- The salary must meet the general threshold of 41,700 pounds a year, or the published going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher.
- From 8 January 2026 first-time applicants must demonstrate English at CEFR B2 across all four skills, up from B1.
- The Immigration Salary List is being phased out in favour of the Temporary Shortage List, and roles on that list carry restrictions including on dependants.
The short answer
A UK Skilled Worker visa begins with the employer, not with you. The employer must hold a sponsor licence, the role must be eligible at RQF Level 6 or above, and the salary must clear both the general threshold and the occupation’s going rate. The system awards 70 points, but fifty of those come from three mandatory conditions that cannot be traded, so in practice it is a checklist rather than a ranking. There is no profile-strengthening exercise that substitutes for finding a licensed sponsor.
Our United Kingdom page sets out the routes we advise on, and the broader comparison with points-ranked systems is in our guide to how the four points systems differ.
Why the points are misleading
The Skilled Worker route requires 70 points. Here is where they come from.
| Requirement | Points | Tradeable |
|---|---|---|
| Job offer from a licensed sponsor | 20 | No |
| Job at the required skill level | 20 | No |
| English at the required level | 10 | No |
| Salary at the required level | 20 | Limited alternatives |
Fifty of the seventy are mandatory and cannot be substituted. The remaining twenty come from salary, with limited tradeable alternatives for a small number of situations such as new entrants and certain PhD holders.
The conclusion is uncomfortable but useful. In Canada or Australia, a candidate can improve a score and change their odds. In the UK there is no score to improve. The work that matters is finding the employer.
The skill level requirement
Since July 2025 the route has applied only to roles at RQF Level 6 or above, broadly equivalent to a bachelor’s degree. Most roles below that level are no longer sponsorable for new overseas applicants.
The exception is the Temporary Shortage List, which covers specified occupations below degree level, at RQF Levels 3 to 5. Two things to know about it. First, it is time limited, and the Immigration Rules require the Certificate of Sponsorship to be issued before the published cut-off for an occupation relying on it. Second, roles on that list carry restrictions, including on bringing dependants.
The Immigration Salary List, which replaced the former Shortage Occupation List, is being phased out in favour of the Temporary Shortage List. Both are revised, so confirm the current position for your occupation on the Home Office eligible occupations tables rather than relying on any secondary source, including this one.
The salary requirement
Two tests, and you must clear both.
The general threshold. 41,700 pounds a year for most new applicants, with an hourly floor applying as well.
The going rate. Each occupation has a published going rate, set at the median for that occupation. Where that figure exceeds the general threshold, the going rate applies.
Lower thresholds apply in defined circumstances, including new entrants to the labour market and certain PhD holders. Roles on the Immigration Salary List qualify at a reduced general threshold, though percentage discounts on the going rate are no longer available.
Only basic gross salary counts. Allowances, overtime and bonuses generally do not. Salaries are calculated against a 37.5-hour week and pro-rated for other patterns.
The English requirement changed in January 2026
From 8 January 2026, first-time Skilled Worker applicants must demonstrate English at CEFR level B2 across reading, writing, listening and speaking. The previous standard was B1.
This matters more than it sounds for Indian applicants, because a great deal of advice published before that date still quotes B1. Dependant partners are subject to their own, lower requirement.
What the employer has to do
Three things sit behind every Skilled Worker visa, and two of them belong to the employer.
- Hold a sponsor licence. The employer applies to the Home Office, is assessed on its genuineness and its ability to meet sponsor duties, and is subject to compliance visits. Many smaller UK employers do not hold one and will not apply for one for a single hire.
- Assign a Certificate of Sponsorship. A specific reference for a specific role and person, confirming the occupation code, salary and dates.
- Pay the associated costs. Including the Certificate of Sponsorship fee and the Immigration Skills Charge, which is levied per year of sponsorship and differs for small and large sponsors.
The candidate pays the visa application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge, which is charged per year of the visa and is usually the largest single cost in the application.
Finding a licensed sponsor from India
This is the only part that matters and the only part that is genuinely difficult.
The Home Office publishes a register of licensed sponsors. It is public, searchable and updated regularly. Target employers who already appear on it, because they have been through the process and understand what it involves. Applying to firms that have never sponsored anyone and hoping they will apply for a licence to hire you is not a strategy.
Apply to roles that clearly sit at RQF Level 6 at salaries above the applicable threshold, because an employer cannot sponsor a role that fails those tests however much they want to hire you. Be explicit that you require sponsorship at application rather than leaving it to be discovered at offer stage.
And be clear about what to refuse. Anyone offering to sell you a Certificate of Sponsorship or a sponsored job offer is describing something unlawful, and it exposes you to refusal and a ban. Our guide to reading overseas recruitment claims covers how these are marketed.
Settlement has become longer
The standard route to Indefinite Leave to Remain has lengthened, and faster settlement is now linked to earnings and to certain frontline public service roles. The specific thresholds and qualifying periods are being revised, so this should be confirmed against current Home Office guidance before it forms part of a long-term plan rather than taken from any guide.
All Skilled Worker visas are now issued as eVisas rather than physical documents.
How Meeras Resource supports UK applications
We assess whether your occupation and likely salary band can actually support a sponsored role before you invest in the process, prepare the candidate-side documentation the employer and the Home Office will require, and support the application through to submission. Where the route is closed to a profile, which under the current rules it frequently is, we say so rather than starting a process that cannot finish.
We do not source employers, sell job offers or arrange sponsorship, and we advise clients against any firm that offers to. We provide consultancy, documentation and preparation support. Sponsorship and visa decisions rest with the employer and the Home Office. You can request a profile evaluation through our contact page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for a UK Skilled Worker visa without a job offer?
No. A job offer from an employer holding a Home Office sponsor licence, who assigns you a Certificate of Sponsorship, is mandatory. If you want a route that does not require an offer at the point of application, the points-tested systems in Canada and Australia, and Germany’s Opportunity Card, work differently.
What is the minimum salary for a UK Skilled Worker visa?
The general threshold is 41,700 pounds a year, or the published going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher. Lower thresholds apply in defined circumstances such as new entrants and certain PhD holders, and for roles on the Immigration Salary List. Only basic gross salary counts.
What English level do I need for the Skilled Worker visa?
From 8 January 2026, first-time applicants must demonstrate CEFR level B2 across reading, writing, listening and speaking. The previous standard was B1, and a great deal of older guidance still quotes it.
Can I be sponsored for a job below degree level?
Only where the occupation appears on the Temporary Shortage List, which covers specified roles at RQF Levels 3 to 5. That list is time limited and roles on it carry restrictions, including on bringing dependants.
How do I find a UK employer who can sponsor me?
The Home Office publishes a public register of licensed sponsors. Target employers already on it, apply to roles that clearly meet the skill level and salary thresholds, and state your sponsorship requirement at application. Never pay for a Certificate of Sponsorship or a job offer.
