A study visa permits enrolment at a university, college or language school abroad. This page sets out how applications are assessed, the documentation required, and how the process aligns with institutional intake dates.
Academic merit alone does not determine these applications. Six factors do, and most relate to funding, intent and documentation rather than grades.
Canada issues a letter of acceptance, the United Kingdom a CAS, the United States an I-20. No application can be filed without it.
Tuition plus one year of living costs, held for a minimum period before applying. Germany requires a blocked account.
IELTS, TOEFL or PTE for English-taught programmes. The institution and the visa rules may set different minimum scores.
Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom each assess whether the applicant is a genuine student. A weak statement of purpose undermines strong academic profiles.
An unexplained change from an existing academic or professional field is the most frequently questioned element of an application.
Mandatory in several countries for the full duration of study, and often required before the visa is issued.
Requirements differ by country, institution and course level. We also advise on Ireland, Singapore, the Netherlands, Italy, Malaysia, Poland and Dubai.
Study permit requiring a letter of acceptance and proof of funds, with term-time work rights and post-graduation permit eligibility.

Discuss Your Options →Study visa files are more substantial than most, because academic record, finances and intent are assessed together.
Your offer, CAS or I-20 from a recognised and, where required, government-approved institution.
Bank statements, education loan sanction letter or blocked account confirmation for the required amount.
A valid IELTS, TOEFL or PTE score, or German proficiency where the programme requires it.
Transcripts, degree certificates and mark sheets, attested where the country requires it.
Your reasons for the course, country and institution, and how these align with your career.
Health examination where required, and insurance covering the full duration of study.
The process runs against institutional intake dates. A delay in arranging funds or a language result moves the entire plan to the following intake.
Match academic background and budget to the appropriate intake.
Secure the offer from a recognised institution.
Arrange financial evidence and language results in time.
Prepare the file, statement of purpose and interview.
The outcome rests with the immigration authority.
Study visa applications more often fail on sequence than on merit. Funds must be held for a minimum period before applying, language results take several weeks, and consulate appointments fill months ahead of the September and January intakes. We plan backwards from the deadline so that no requirement is identified too late.
Several countries offer graduate work routes, and some lead on to residence. These are covered alongside our migration pathways.
Limited term-time work is permitted in several countries, within the hour limits set by the visa.
Canada's post-graduation work permit, Australia's subclass 485 and the UK Graduate route each allow a period of open work.
