Visitor and Tourist Visas Requirements and Process

A visitor visa permits a short stay for tourism, family visits, business meetings or medical treatment. This page sets out how applications are assessed, what documentation is required, and the common grounds for refusal.

How Applications
Are Assessed

Visit visa decisions are discretionary. The assessing officer is determining whether the applicant will depart when permission ends, and each of the following contributes to that judgement.

Purpose of Travel

The stated reason must be consistent with the supporting documents. A business visit without an invitation letter presents an inconsistency.

Ties to Home

Employment, property, dependents or a business in India. This is the most common ground cited in refusals.

Financial Evidence

Bank statements demonstrating a consistent balance, rather than a lump sum deposited shortly before applying.

Host or Sponsor

An invitation letter, the host's status in that country, and confirmation of who is meeting the costs.

Travel History

Previous visas complied with, and any overstay, refusal or removal recorded in any country.

Duration and Entries

Single or multiple entry, and whether the period requested is proportionate to the stated purpose.

Documentation
Requirements

Visit visa applications are refused on documentation considerably more often than on eligibility. The following is the core set required by nearly every country.

Valid Passport

Meeting the validity period required beyond your travel dates, with blank pages available.

Bank Statements

Typically the preceding three to six months, demonstrating a consistent balance.

Proof of Ties

Employment letter with approved leave, property documents, or business registration in India.

Travel Itinerary

Intended dates of entry and departure, with flight and internal travel details.

Accommodation

Hotel reservations, or an invitation letter and address from your host in that country.

Insurance and Health

Travel insurance, mandatory for Schengen applications, and any medical requirements set by the country.

Our Process

Appointment slots at busy consulates are frequently booked several weeks ahead, so sequence is as important as documentation.

01

Purpose and Country

Confirm the destination and the correct visa category.

02

Document Review

Assess passport, funds, ties and supporting records.

03

Application

Complete the forms and compile the full document set.

04

Biometrics / Interview

Prepare for appointments at the embassy or consulate.

05

Decision

The outcome rests with the visa office concerned.

A Refusal Affects
Future Applications

A refused visit visa must be declared on subsequent applications to other countries, often for several years. For that reason the substantive work belongs before submission. We assess the file against the criteria the officer will apply and advise candidly where a profile is not yet ready.

Dependent Visas

A dependent visa permits immediate family to join someone already holding a valid visa or residency status. For a longer-term move, see our migration pathways.

Who Qualifies

Generally spouses and unmarried children below the age limit set by that country, commonly 18 to 21.

Proof of Relationship

Marriage certificates, birth certificates or adoption papers establishing the relationship to the primary holder.

Financial Support

Evidence that the primary visa holder can support dependents throughout the stay.

Validity

Normally tied to the primary holder's visa, and renewed or extended alongside it.

Questions About Visitor Visas?

Answers on permitted stay, documentation, grounds for refusal and reapplying.

A visitor visa, also termed a tourist or visit visa, is a temporary visa permitting entry to a country for a short period for tourism, visiting family or friends, business meetings or medical treatment. It does not permit paid employment, and the permitted stay depends on the country and the visa granted.
Permitted periods vary by country. A Canadian Temporary Resident Visa is commonly granted for up to six months per entry, a Schengen visa permits 90 days within any 180-day period, and Australian visitor visas range from three months to one year. The officer at the port of entry may set a shorter period.
The most frequent causes are insufficient evidence of ties to India, bank statements showing a recent lump-sum deposit rather than a consistent balance, a stated purpose inconsistent with the supporting documents, and incomplete files. Officers assess likelihood of return, and each of these weakens that assessment.
No. Visitor visas do not permit paid employment. Attending meetings, conferences and contract negotiations is generally permitted, but taking up work is not. Where overseas employment is the objective, the job seeker visa and work permit routes are the appropriate pathways.
Yes, although resubmitting the same file generally produces the same outcome. A refusal must be declared on future applications, so a second attempt should directly address the stated ground of refusal with new evidence. Establishing the precise reason for refusal is the first step.
Some countries permit extensions in limited circumstances, such as an unexpected emergency or unavoidable delay, granted at that country's discretion. An extension should not be assumed when planning travel, and any request must be made before current permission expires.
Family members may generally apply for their own visitor visas alongside yours, often as a linked application. Separately, dependent visas exist for immediate family joining someone who already holds a valid visa or residency status in that country.
